This is additional information I have posted on the Adobe Lightroom Forum: I have tried reseting and it alters nothing on the main panel, but the very strange thing is that the thumbnail at the top of the left panel (in Develop) reverts to colour. Something very strange is going on, and it seems to be a pretty random collection of images affected. All the images (as far as I can tell) are from a Panasonic GH-2 I was using at that time, and in some cases I have 2 copies of the same image on file (e.g. 10221.dng and 10221-2.dng) and in those cases the first is in b&w and the second in colour. The problem is definitely within Lightroom as the images appear in colour in other programs. Very strange.
