I seem to remember, more than a decade ago when I was working with film, that I wiped the film with one of those high-quality sponges before hanging it up to dry in a dust-free environment, i.e. a shower stall. I can visualize two sponges on a springy mount, so that the film can be squeezed gently. I'd try that before bothering with distilled water.
