Off the the side. Crank. You name it. Its a much better thing since Manfrotto took over. They cost around 500 to 800 dollars. Manfrotto Resin are a little cheaper I think by about 20 percent. To me there is no higher priority than a Gitzo tripod. AS high as the body you're putting on it. As high as the lens in front of that body. To me a tripod is The key piece of gear.
