Doug H. probably knows for sure, but I believe you can tell an upgraded R8 by the gold contacts on bottom rear of film chamber. Seems like when the contacts are 'flat' (they are on mine) there's been an upgrade, and the contacts were swapped from the (possibly) concave originals.
