George, don't forget that there is a mirror in front of the sensor too and
that clearance there might be a problem (for some R lenses?) even if the
rest was feasible. More importantly, remember that Leica camera cancelled
the R10 which was to have a 24x36 sensor because that body was to have cost
6 to 7000 EURO (less than half of the S2 price). They did not believe that
it could compete in the dSLR market place nor were the owners of
(discontinued) R lenses a sufficient customer base.

But this is all very old ground now reploughed ;-) Sorry, no harm in
discussing and theorising of course. Not meaning to rain on your
parade. There's a dearth of photokina speculation here. I think something
new in the M mount category may be more likely ;-)
