You may very well be correct Geoff.
While I've not seen the anatomical drawings of an S2;
I can imagine that pushing a smaller sensor forward 
may very well be feasible; perhaps not.

And much of the S2 price rests in the large sensor
(which I understand as geometric ratio sensor size : cost),
extensive R&D along with the very limited production numbers.

An SR would significantly increase production numbers
of the basic skeleton, electronics and many other parts;
and combined with a 24x36 sensor would reduce the net cost of production.

Just an idea.
