My left shoulder is also higher, for the same reason, although I've only got 
43 years of carrying my bag on the left.  Yesterday my shoulder joint was 
sore after shooting a dormitory extreme frisbee game, standing with camera 
bag, 5D + 24-105 and 1D MkII + 70-200 on me.  I have a spare camera strap 
attached to the left end of my Tough Traveler bag that lets me loop it over 
my right shoulder, thus simulating a backpack, but with quicker access.
