The very idea sets one's teeth on edge. In the end, of course, yes, we can agree that there's room for all kinds: but that does mean ALL, including the Bonehead of Burlington. If you look at the street photography of Cartier Bresson, for instance, since the thread started there: in my opinon you will see a shy and quiet and retiring photographer: he's devastatingly observant and smart but he's never all that close. (Paris Comment, you might call him) (pronounce it with a strong French accent... never mind). Cartier Bresson is contemplative, almost zen in mood, with every vision seeming deeply composed, even amid the changing forms of an urban street. Eugene Smith on the other hand is a complete maniac and had to use all his charms not to get himself killed though of course a few times he came quite close. They are very different but often discussed in reference to one another. I love them both, though I love HCB a little more. He lived a little closer to the angels than do the rest of us and Smith lived a little closer to the demons. Both brought back vital news.
