I don't have an E-3, but I have a couple of m4/3 cameras, and while
they definitely produce images that I'm generally quite happy with,
they fall behind the M8 images in a number of ways. Poor as the M8 is
at high ISO, it's better than the G1, GF1 or EP1. The M8 files are
also more forgiving both of over and underexposure; they just have
more dynamic range. And, they hold somewhat more detail in spite of
being 10Mb vs. 12Mb.
Since I profiled the cameras with Colorchecker Passport the colours
from the Panasonics are significantly better, and equal to those of
the EP1, but not quite as good as those from the M8.
So the M8 files are somewhat better in pretty much every category.
Not a huge difference necessarily, but it's there. And then there's
the handling and ergonomics. The M8 is still a Leica, and once one
gets used to that most other cameras seem overly complicated with
things getting in the way. That, of course is quite subjective.
M8 files certainly aren't as good as those from my full frame Canons
with the best glass, but the difference there is not so much in
actual detail as in the high ISO capability. The smudging that the
noise reduction does is offset by the higher pixel count. Dynamic
range is not that different.
