If you look at the front of the M8 at the red dot, to the left and at the 10 o'clock position is a little sensor used for this purpose. I think that's correct. It's been a couple years since I read about it. If you had certain software you could get the data from the exif data string. I guess Leica never put it in the viewed data as it was never very accurate. I think Ted is correct about it's usefulness but I'm an engineer and find useless information interesting at times.
