Yes buying a laptop for a few week trip is certainly impractical.  I use a 
laptop for my main computer, so it is the ideal solution for me.  Since you 
do not have a laptop, then the extra SD cards is a good solution for a short 
trip.  If you plan on taking a lot of trips, then one of the storage units 
that do not require a computer may be a good alternative since they are 
small, and some have viewing capability.
