I think we've got the edge on you in Europe with our dippers though; Cinclus cinclus has a beautiful white breast and is an absolutely charming bird. If the American counterpart has the same habits you did very well to catch this, I've never seen one still for more than a couple of seconds. I spent a very happy half a hour once in Lynmouth on the north coast of Devon watching one fishing in a fast-flowing river. This American Dipper (Cinclus mexicanus) was feeding in the Merced River in Yosemite Valley: http://wildlightphoto.com/birds/cinclidae/amdi01.html Dippers feed on aquatic invertebrates by diving into the water and turning over sunken leaves and other debris to find their prey. Walking or 'flying' underwater, they're quite safe even in very turbulent streams, and typically build their nest behind a waterfall. Dippers are so linked to the streams they reside in that when flying (in the air) upstream or downstream the bird will follow the contours of the watercourse rather than take shortcuts over land. technical stuff: R8/DMR, 560mm f/6.8 Telyt, shoulder stock & monopod. ISO 400, 1/60 sec @ f/6.8 All comments welcome. Doug Herr Birdman of Sacramento http://www.wildlightphoto.com _______________________________________________ Leica Users Group.
