AA filters not only decrease moire they also correct aliasing and color fringing by less then optimal optics; which allows for looser design and manufacturing tolerances. You're also correct that each photographer seeks the best solution for their imaging needs. Lucky for us many alternatives at many price points exist for us to choose from.
