It may slightly OT, but it is not controversial, so with Brian's
permission I will reply here.

I have used LinkedIn for a few years, and on occasion have found it
useful. I have not used it to look for a job, but I have used it to
recruit people and have helped others do so. I also find it handy to
keep updated on what acquaintances from previous jobs are doing today--
with my friends, I know it anyway because I am in touch with them
through other means, but there is a larger group of people with whom
my relationship was strictly work-related, and for keeping up with
that group I find LinkedIn very useful.

I joined Facebook a few months ago, mainly to see what my daughter was
spending lots of her time on, and to see what she was up to (with her
permission, obviously--that is one of the strong features of facebook,
that you cannot "spy" on people). During the past month or so I have
expanded my use of it, and have reconnected with classmates from 30
years ago with whom I otherwise had lost contact. So I quite enjoy it.
And its chatting feature is useful too, obviating the need for having
a separate chat program running.
