Protestors and those who wish to draw attention to their particular issue now seem to accompany almost any public event. The new law prohibiting "annoying" participants in the World Youth Day activities is an example of increasingly common restrictions here. Many Australian consider the terms of this prohibition so broad that they are entirely unreasonable. Each new high profile event now seems to require these broad additional police powers. Whatever their intent and application, they mean more restrictions, and potential abuse along with erosion of reasonable rights. Photography in public is one of the casualties. When a group of world leaders visited Sydney recently, a large piece of the CBD was fenced off to the public and even photographing the security barriers of concrete and wire fencing became an offence. This after many thousands of people walked passed them every day. Lunacy. Incidentally, more than 500,000 people are expected to attend the final Papal Mass. The whole event has cost tax payers more than $160 million dollars so far. According to the Boston Globe: A new law that gives authorities the power to order anyone to stop behavior considered "annoying" toward the pilgrims has been assailed as a form of censorship. Anyone who does not comply with the regulations could face a fine of $5,300. -- Regards, Sonny http://www.sonc.com Natchitoches, Louisiana USA _______________________________________________ Leica Users Group.
