I have lots of experience with dental work. At this point my mouth is mostly crowns and crowns on implants and I have at least four root canals behind me, including one that had to be redone after a few years. (Memory's a bit dim on the actual number. Most go a long way back.) In my experience it's possible to work through the crown to do the root canal in some cases and then to repair the crown in-situ. I had this done once to good effect though eventually I had to have to crown replaced due to further decay. It may not work in this case, but ask your dentist what he or she thinks.
