While there is a 'cachet' for having a Red Dot (which, absent several lucky Powerball numbers, for me isn't in the cards), I'm just pleased as punch with my M3. In a world of plastic electronic cameras, using an elegantly designed, superbly engineered, metal, mechanical RF camera is a joy in itself. Unlike the first 'pro' digitals of several years ago that have long been dumped on the plastic scrapheap of history, until there's no more film, I like what I have. I too am glad that the non-users are keeping Leica alive, if for the sake of glass alone. If it takes an a la carte leopard skin covering to cater to the moneyed set, it has to be better than renting your sister by the half-hour. :) Was reading a 1980 Kodak book on photography yesterday. On the subject of cameras, they have a Barnack and a R pictured, relegating RF to a cheap 'point and shoot' status, and the SLR was what 'serious' photographers used. The featured Olympus OM2, an example of 'state of the art' then, is now but a quaint example of Disco-Era technology. Thirty, forty, and fifty year old Ms have weathered the passage of time, obsolescence, and depreciation like few others have. My 778XXX DS M3 isn't particularly 'collectable', but it is eminently useful for what I do with it. A gull wing Benz in good shape is worth a lot of coin, but is it still a daily driver? I am certain that there remains a role for cameras of all types, from large format to digital, and it is a matter of choice. Final question: Is anyone forking over the bucks to CLA/overhaul an early generation digital to keep it useable?
