It is to do with margins and prosperity I suppose. In the US there is so much more disposable income that dealers can to have a generous stock, in the UK even the specialist dealers outside London would not have any exotic items - like a 28mm f1.4 - in stock. The first time I saw almost any fancy piece of gear other than a picture in a magazine was in US dealers when visiting. I always made a trip if I could whenever I visited the US. I often bought stuff also.
