I do find it best to get in and get going...I have my lens attached to my camera, media card/ film loaded and everything ready to go sitting in my camera bag. Often my best shots are the first few of a sitting. Then again, sometimes the best ones come after an hour of getting to know the child and playing with him/her. It really depends on the subject. I don't promise a set time, a set amount of proofs, a set anything other than that I will show up, do my darndest and give them good results. If I didn't get anything good, I do a reshoot. I've only had to do this once or twice and while it seems like a drag it really is good business and it always makes me feel better when I KNOW I did a good job. And of course the client likes that, too.
