Subject: [Leica] No more subway, train or bus shots in NYC

The sheer illogical stupidity of this proposal is breathtaking. Do they
plan to stop people writing in notebooks as well?

This is one of those occasions where I just wish I could zero in on the
individuals who proposed this ban and ask them to explain exactly how
photographing a public place that millions of people are allowed to stand
and look at if they choose, could possibly constitute an increased security
risk. Buses for goodness sake! What can you possibly learn from a
photograph of the inside of a bus that you can't learn from sitting on one
for 5 minutes?

Airport security staff have started asking me why my Minox LX "needs to be
so small" so I'm thinking of keeping an M handgrip screwed to the tripod
bush to throw them off the scent.

It's a good job Walker Evans and Bruce Davidson have done their work already

>From the May 20, 2004 edition of the NY Times:

"Citing the security of 7 million daily riders, 48,000 employees and its
transportation network, New York City Transit yesterday proposed a ban on
unauthorized photography, filming and videotaping on city subways, buses and
Staten Island Railway trains. The press and businesses or individuals with
permits would be exempt."
