     I did used to believe that until I took a workshop with David Vestal. 
His negs were THICK and his prints were great, too. He's the one I learned 
Tri-X at EI 250 in D-23 from, which is the magic combination I find myself 
repeatedly coming back to. There's nothing quite like shadow detail!

But a 35mm neg requires the minimum density to get the image.  In other 
words no more exposure or development than needed for adequate detail. Or 
grain builds up and you get a mushier negative to make a less well separated 
print.
