First of all, did they say the Leica lens was a poor performer, or just
slightly behind the Zeiss version? Yes, they are optically different. The
only real difference is the coating and finishing, I believe. (Not to
mention the mount). And you are right, it's most likely the variation
between samples.

Second, Pop Photos test are suspect from the very beginning.
