I carry a Luna-Pro SBC, mostly for really long exposures.  With digital
take an image and look at the histogram, adjust accordingly.  With film
there are still a lot of paper solutions out there to guide
exposure loosely based on the sunny 16 rule or alternatively the 100 watt
light bulb rule.  I still have an old Kodak dial calculator to provide
exposure from a variety of sources as extreme as circus to street lights.
That one came in a data guide..
