Today was the worst day for smoke here in Davis. We are in the most extreme
air quality warning level. Today visibility on the ground was about 2 miles
during the afternoon. This evening, even though it?s 78 outside, we?re not
opening the house.

In the old days, in the autumn, the practice was to burn the stubble in the
rice fields. Back then, in the late 60s, we had days like this. But then
only fields were burning. Now peoples? lives are going up in flames. The
half-decade of drought has prepared us for this.

I made the mistake of reading the comments to the Wall Street Journal
articles about the fire. They are hateful with no sympathy for those who
have lost so much, for the people who have died. I weep for what we have
become, so utterly without compassion for each other.

There is a terrific image taken from the International Space Station showing
the smoke blowing eastward toward the Rockies. I cannot find a link to it
but do take a look.
