The opening night of the Royal Hibernian Academy's Summer Exhibition was
held on the 21st May at its impressive gallery in Ely Place, Dublin. The
RHA has been established since 1823 to promote art in Ireland and was an
offshoot of the British Royal Academy. Almost every artist - both
amateur and professional - in Ireland tries to get into the Summer
Exhibition, and this year, 1,400 artists submitted 2,600 entries which
were eventually whittled down to 350 works to be shown to the Irish
public over the summer.

Luckily enough for myself and my wife, we get an invitation to the
opening which gives us a chance to get a work that might appeal before
most. We don't necessarily buy every year, but it's nice to have the
option of first dibs. I do always bring a camera, but the lighting is
pitched for mood and ambiance, and not with the amateur photographer in
mind. Here is one where the both painting and subject appear to be present.

Tony with blue hat attends the RHA's Summer Exhibition which happily has
a painting of him wearing a blue hat by his brother - the artist Neil
Shawcross.
