Examining the feedback from my ant posting, I decided I needed better
ant photos, but did not want to get too up close and personal with
them.  I first tried a closeup AF lens, but didn't like the results.  I
then pulled out my Pentax 135 MF lens and got results that I could
enlarge.  While colors are unreliable in the sun, and the objects are
small, the shapes and sizes convince me that these are, indeed, fire ants.

There is a U-Tube video online that shows what happens when one sticks a
shovel into a fire ant mound.  These behave exactly the same to much
smaller intrusions.
