Many of the bison that Leo showed have ancestors that come form New York. In
the 1800's a group?of bison were imported to the New York Bronx zoo. In the
early 1900's the curators of the zoo, aware of the decimation of the bison
population by overzealous hunters, sent a breeding herd out west to
reestablish the bison. The experiment succeeded beyond the zoo's wildest
dreams and thousands of bison now roam in the grasslands.?

By the way, bison meat is very delicious. A bit tougher than beef but less
fat and very flavorful. It is widely sold in local butcher shops along with
it's close sibling, beefalo steaks.
