Model releases are not necessary for editorial use unless you are implying something pejorative about the people in the photo - drug use, prostitution, etc. I would never do that. You would probably be surprised at the number of model releases I do have! In 40 years of photography, I can count on one hand the number of times people have refused to sign a model release. It helps that I have them put an address on the release and promise to send them copies, which I do. Now there is a model release app for the iPhone which makes it really easy. They put in their e-mail address and I send digital photos. Photos which are leased as royalty free do have to have a model release for every identifiable person in the photo because RF photos are leased for any purpose. I've never leased a photo as RF.
