Tina,
The new Microsoft "Surface" line of tables/laptops are pretty flexible,
priced ok and will write to a hard drive.  May I suggest a solid state
drive both in the proposed computing device and as an external back up.
Samsung in particular is selling their solid state drives for a relative
song right now and are available up to a terabyte.
