Actually, it makes perfect sense, both for the market this camera is 
aimed at and in regards to lens design.
Most folks have no need of all the pixels of the sensor anyway, so a 
crop to an effective 35 or even 50 mm focal length will not harm quality 
for something on the web or printed 8 x 10.
