Here in the UK the Afghan girl picture will be much better known than the NASA one, in the USA I could easily imagine the NASA picture has been more widely distributed. In the world? I have no idea. In terms of number of people being familiar with it I would guess an iconic picture from an Indian photographer would be known by more people "in the world", even if you and I have never seen it, simply since there are over a billion people in India!
