I wouldn?t think so.
We do tend to say ?in the world? when we mean "around here??
Here in the UK the Afghan girl picture will be much better known than the 
NASA one, in the USA I could easily imagine the NASA picture has been more 
widely distributed.
In the world? I have no idea.
In terms of number of people being familiar with it I would guess an iconic 
picture from an Indian photographer would be known by more people "in the 
world", even if you and I have never seen it, simply since there are over a 
billion people in India!
