Richard,
Eye contact and a smile, followed by hand motions. Never asked or used the
local/tour guide for translation. In many places, the people would come to
me and enquire "Hindu?", which apparently is the generic name for Indians,
and on getting an affirmative, would break out into a big smile with
evident friendliness, and shake hands. After that, getting to photograph
them was a cinch! Of course, in the smaller places, quite a few ladies
would wanted their photos taken with one of our wives. It was all quite
friendly. I never ever felt threatened or uncomfortable walking around
alone anywhere during the whole tour - the only thing that irritated me was
the fact that if I was walking anywhere in Shanghai and Beijing without
Neela by my side, I would get accosted for sex every ten yards or so!
Cheers
Jayanand
