I'm finding that the EVF allows stopping down a few stops with no problem; 
when using focus assist feature; and even without depending on the subject 
and lighting.

It does take getting used to.
As in "practice".

I use it in black and white mode; as it seems to reduce distractions; and 
allows for concentrating on focus and composition.

Obviously this all gets down to personal working methodology.
