One teacher taught grades 1 through 7 and there were often 40 children trying to learn in this small building. It was in use until 1944. That stuns because it means this building was in use as a school during my lifetime! Black children in Maryland were not allowed to attend high school until 1934. Once a black child finished the seventh grade that was more or less it for his or her education.
