Senna is a fascinating study. I think he and Alonso today have some
similarities. They seem to get to absolute maximum of out of what a car is
capable of doing. I believe Steve Matchett was with you there, too, correct?
He does commentating here in the states for the races. Terribly saddened
about Schumacher's skiing accident. I do hope he improves but the things I'm
seeing aren't too positive about a complete recovery.

An American football coach was once talking how good one of his peers was
with getting the most out of the athletic talent of his players. The quote
was something like "He could take your players and beat his and then take
his players and beat yours." I think of Senna & Alonso when I hear that....

I knew Senna well, but only as a competitor. He was one of the very few
drivers who showed a genuine interest in how the car worked, and tried to
understand. There is lots in the press about various good test drivers and
good at setting up cars. I have rarely seen it, it is normally the engineer
who sets up the car using driver comments to steer his actions. Mansell
always set his own car up, his "race engineer" was just a secretary keeping
notes, but this is really rare!
On the fateful day in 1994 I was Chief Engineer of Benetton and was running
Schumacher and Lehto.
