In my numerous experiences renting cars, I have found them to be uniformly
maintained. Even had one once that was down enough oil to light the light on
the dash.

"In my case, however, both cars were bought from a new car dealer of
relevant brand, had been properly serviced all the way and were not the
type of cars you could drive off road even if you wanted to. And each
had
more than 2 years left of the 3-year factory warranty."

Nathan is right. A close relative, a Chevrolet dealer, told me that
most of the profit a car dealer makes from a car rental is the
subsequent sale of the rented car to a buyer at the end of the lease.
He advised me, in confidence, to buy formerly rented cars instead of
new ones. Let the renter take the immediate depreciation. Cars leased
to fleets or car rental firms like Hertz are even cheaper but tend to
be harder used.
