It depends a lot on the photographer's patience and skill at reading and 
responding to the animal's emotional state.  Probably explains the 
popularity of 600mm+ lenses among many wildlife photographers.

The 280 APO's minimum focus distance is a tad under 5' 6" and I always carry 
an extension tube when using the 280.  I don't often use the extension tube 
but I've used it often enough that I know I'll need it again.
