The road to Nubra from Leh is actually the highest motorable road in the world, touching a high of 18,380 feet at Khardung La. At that altitude, walking a few hundred feet tires you out, and you should be slow and deliberate in all your movements. The road has been built, and is maintained by the Indian Army on a 24/7 basis, not surprisingly given the sensitivity of the area.
