Dear Sonny,
I know what you mean and am completely with you.

The problem is twofold.
One - papers got purchased by people thinking they would get a good ROI.
And so editors are no longer the type you remember!

Two - the average person is educated less and less and thus does not even
miss the old standards.

Two months ago I wrote a letter to Brian McGrory, the editor of the Boston
Globe.
It was in response to a very nice old-fashioned story that he had allowed
his paper to print after it was clear that the target of the story was no
longer politically untouchable and after the Mayor of Boston had announced
his retirement from local politics due to ill health. Bar both factors he
would not have printed the story. Just as he has been loath to cover what
happened to me at Cambridge Hospital.

The letter is pasted below. I sent it certified with return receipt and it
was signed for.

You don't get it Jay.  It is not about keeping your job.

It is about Newspapers forgetting what they are about.

I was a photo journalist when my boss cared that I got a good story.

I was called before a grand jury and refused to divulge my source, and my
station stood by me.

You don't understand that, because you are just a photographer.

I was a photo journalist when it meant something in America.

Just don't get me started.  (I guess you did)
