For a different but serious description of Hitler's rule in that time I 
recommend Ian Kershaw's "The End". 

He covers the period from the failed attempt to assassinate Hitler on 20 
July 1944 to Germany's unconditional surrender on 9 May 1945. 

I can vouch for the accuracy of Kershaw's depiction.
