Mark,
  the Nikon batteries have a counter of sorts, and the camera will  
fail if you use 3rd party batteries, my experience.
Now I'm waiting until Leica issues a solar energy camera, very handy  
for very long exposure night shots ;-)
Keep reading French ;-)
