Don't know about limeys roots as a nickname, though it probably comes from the citrus fruits carried on ships on long voyages to avoid rickets due to vitamin deficiency. We couldn't easily get limes in the UK when I was young, post war rationing was still in place when I was born. I think the first lime I saw was in Milwaukee where I had a summer job in 1970, though it could have been 1978, my first time in Brazil. I used to bring them home from Brazil back then since they weren't readily available here... Anyway G&T is the classic English drink, and ice and lemon would be the usual addition (I have literally never seen lime in a G&T here). I usually only drink beer and wine, but a G&T on a warm day hits the spot.
