I think the difference is, to paraphrase a former President, it depends on what right means...... Your (Gene) N or C lenses all work within some tolerance of perfect. 100%. The word tolerance means +/- or anywhere in between. Manufacturing is better now than ever before, and the spread of tolerances is tighter. However, there are lenses that will be 0% and other that will be at the extreme of acceptance criteria, as established by the manufacturer. Ditto your body. Say the lens was + and the body is -. Those tolerances (may) balance out and you get 0% total tolerance. Or they may be both + in which case, the result is worse than either alone, as measured on test equipment. This is specifically why the internal calibration is so important. Yes, your analysis is correct, any junkie, out of tolerance, 75 year old lens can ( maybe) be made to operate at zero tolerance on your body. It will produce amazing in focus images. Because you took out all the focus errors. Why buy N or C or L in that case? Because the images from the lens noted above are of poor IQ. They suck technically. Coma, astigmatism, lousy lens coatings, whatever. Just lousy lenses that are in perfect focus. The scary part is that with photography being digital, and computer algorithms being more sophisticated, you can fix all those other errors...... So that there will be no reason to either manufacture or purchase a decent lens. Take that lousy lens and run it through the computer to make it "perfect". These cameras and lenses should be right when they get to the user, and not require user adjustments to work correctly. So far, My D4 and AF-S lenses have been right on when I received them, and I expect them to be correct. Would you not expect your new car or TV to be working correctly when you get them? It seems that today everyone expects defects (except the Leica bunch), and that buying a software fix is just fine. Oh, your lens is soft, just run the files through So & So Software and it will be sharp. Sorry not for me. Why even buy a N or C lens then, any old piece of junk will do just fine after running the software lens fix. If you think they are shoddy don't use them. Period. No one is talking you out of using whatever equipment you wish to use. Talk about cognitive bias, narrow mindedness and chips on the shoulder. Get a life.
