Subject: [Leica] 90mm 2.8 & etching

I'm looking to pick up a 90/2.8 Elmarit-m so I'm learning about the etching
problem on the early, black mounts. Did Leica ever explain what caused
this, and, if I were to find a clean one without the etching, could I rely
on the idea that if it hasn't etched yet, it won't in the future?
