Thanks, I imported it fine then lost something - not sure what. When trying
to import again the catalog said items were known about but not present.
Usually with a database you can force a database restore (authoritive
restore) with suitably high rights and different syntax etc, LR does not
seem to allow this........

There's a very, very good, short video from Julianna Kost on importing a
separate catalog into a master catalog here:

http://tv.adobe.com/watch/the-complete-picture-with-julieanne-kost/lr3-merging-individual-lightroom-catalogs-into-a-master-catalog-/

It's for LR3 but I used the instructions with no problems in August with
LR4.

I think this is the process you were looking for (essentially, exporting a
catalog with associated files and edits from a separate computer or external
storage and importing it into your master catalog on your principal
machine).

Apologies if I'm misunderstanding the question. :-)

Thanks for everybody's input, I had had it imported properly and then lost
it somehow (joy of jet-lag). I am at a loss as to how LR cannot be made to
overwrite the existing photos if wanted, I can see what happened to me as
being a large mess on occasions.....

I went back to an August backup (I was away all September) and the import
worked fine which it had not done on my Oct 5th backup. Far less work to add
the last couple of days in August and October photos again!

I was using LR 4.1 on a laptop when I was away and trying to import it to my
workstation (LR 4.1) - not done this before.

I exported on laptop, then moved the files where I wanted on workstation and
imported the catalog. That seemed to work, I then deleted the .lrcat and
.lrdata files.....it seems that they are needed to keep the imported
settings! Even if I put the same files back it does not work, I want some
edits plus keywords from the laptop.

Whenever I try and import the catalog I get that the original negative is
missing, I am unable to choose to import even the metadata from these
images. I have deleted all the photos and tried starting again from a backup
.lrcat but am not sure what is stored where...

Screengrab of what I get -
http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/Chiaroscuro/Misc/Screen+Shot+2012-10-06+at+5_15_40+PM.jpg.html

I can import the photos no problem, but want the exported catalog as it has
keywords - any ideas?

Thanks

john
