I agree with you, Chris.  And I was working with a manual focus lens, which 
I normally use with the Aperture Preferred mode.  However, the system for 
using reduced flash intensity is omitted in Aperture Preferred mode.  You 
either get no flash, with the popup down, or, full flash with the popup 
raised.  So, I had to devise my own solution.
