We just got a $1000 discount (30%), from the hospital, off my wife's knee
replacement surgery. We have a $4000 deductible per person on our insurance
before they pay since we are retired. So this discount is well received
right now. ;)

For future reference, in my experience if you are going to a hospital for a
procedure that carries a high list price and you are uninsured but have
access to some cash money the list price becomes negotiable.

You just have to find out who has the authority and negotiate with him/her.

Generally, someone does.

They are deeply discounting their prices for the insurance companies and
there is no reason you should not get the same or a similar discount.

And for all of you who are deeply critical of the way the US health care
system's financial component works I have just three words: You are right.
