I've used a Gitzo tripod with legs collapsed as an in effect monopod
extensively. A nice part comes along when you get a chance to spread out the
legs and shoot at any shutter speed you want and set up the shot and forget
about it. Tripod use is grossly underestimated I think. I find it a
freeing experience. And part of that experience is you can just keep the
legs folded and use it as a monopod working on the run; just stopping to
plant the legs down on the ground. I remember I used to also get shots buy
holding the tripod high above my head making the camera itself get well
above 6 feet and freeing off exposures that way. Doing events with a
Hasselblad.
