Even a "pro-sumer" level 3CCD camera will outperform the
DSLR by virtue of means of capture and a wider_color_gamut. Even using
a superwide lens on a DSLR you're not getting faster than f/2.8 while
DV cams get down to f/1.3 on the high end.

Yes there is that cost factor. You can put together the Rube Goldberg
ungainly, bad ergonomic system for $6k or you could just buy a pro
level DV cam that will record better quality HDV along with 24p, 30p,
60p, 60i and across aspect ratios.

THEN you can start talking audio. The HDV cams give you options while
the DSLRs force you to use a little hot shoe mic or even a mini-jack.
The best option here is to just synch sound with a slate but that
becomes awkward and for rolling footage of event coverage, ungainly and
probably unsustainable.

THEN you can start talking timecode which is one of the main reasons
that people who do this often would never think about using a DSLR.

So it's not all about acreage is it?
I think it's also about what company pays the photographers to use
their gear. That or they just don't want to spend a few hundred on a
truly pro level video camera rental for a few days.
