You are both right--Tintin can be enjoyed by children and adults, but there
is certainly a serious layer in it, just as is the case with Andersen's
fairly tales. In the case of Tintin, I recently read an excerpt of a book as
part of the French course I am currently following, in which leading
philosophers wrote short essays about their favourite Tintin book and what
it means for them.

Cheers,
Nathan
